2025 Summer Hockomock Travel

As spring starts and the girls are kicking off their Rec softball seasons, we are beginning our process for registration for Summer Hockomock Travel teams. Summer Hock has been in existence for over 20 years and is a great way for the softball players in our program to continue playing competitive softball over the summer, after their spring teams are finished.

The season starts in the middle of June and will conclude at the end of July. The Hockomock Girls Softball League (HGSL) is the oldest and most competitive youth softball league in the state with over 90 teams from 25 towns, at 4 different age levels! Mansfield was one of the original 6 teams to form this league!

MGSA will offer at five divisions of travel teams this summer (pending sufficient interest at any division):

8U-A player whose 9th birthday is prior to September 1, 2024, is INELIGIBLE.
10U- A player whose 11th birthday is prior to September 1, 2024, is INELIGIBLE.
12U- A player whose 13th birthday is prior to September 1, 2024, is INELIGIBLE.
14U-A player whose 15th birthday is prior to September 1, 2024, is INELIGIBLE.
18U-A player whose 19th birthday is prior to September 1, 2024, is INELIGIBLE.

Please note the eligibility for each age group as it will be important when registering (this is different then rec and spring as we go by grade based and have some flexibility on players moving up or down divisions, in summer travel there is little flexibility):

Please only register for your age appropriate division,
"Moving/playing up" will only be approved by the MGSA Board and will depend on overall signup numbers.
Special consideration will be given to those that have moved up in the past for summer travel to help form teams.
If space is available, players may be asked/request to participate at their designated age level and the level above.

If there are more than 12 players registered at any one age group, tryouts will be needed. If there are more than 24 interested at any age group, then we can form two teams (A and B) and again, tryouts would be needed.

The registration fee is currently set at $0. Once we determine if there is enough interest to field a team in each division, the cost will be approximately $250 (the total number of players on each team will determine final cost).

Important dates:

Registration deadline: it is essential that all interested players sign-up by 11:59 PM Friday April 18th; the reasons are:
as stated above, the number of registrants at an age level will dictate if a tryout is needed (except 8U, see below)
8U division: any player interested will be eligible to participate pending they have participated in our Spring Rec league
HGSL has strict roster limits that influence how teams are formed
Late registrations will only be accepted if:
a team is in need of additional players and did not have a tryout
Tryouts, if needed, will be held on a date to be determined
Your player must be present for the tryout if they want to earn permanent status on a team for the season (see below).

Team Practices: begin week of June 1st
Game Season starts: Monday June 16th and Tues June 17th
12U and 18U: games on Mon and Wed evenings
10U and 14U: games on Tue and Thur evenings
8U: to be determined
Season concludes: week of July 20th (for those teams that qualify for the playoffs)
Please note: some teams may be participating in weekend tournaments that take place the weekend before, during, or after the season (if any, the maximum would be 2 tournaments); more to come on this depending on the number of teams we have at each age division

Participation and Roster Status:

Roster Status for players (10U and above):
Permanent player: this player has earned permanent status on the team via their evaluation rating from the tryout; they are eligible to play in all games this season. Full participation cost will be applied for this player
Alternate player: this player is a member of the team; they are expected to attend all practices, and will be asked to play in games on an as needed basis (while there is no guarantee on the number of (if any) games an alternate will be asked to play, players at this status have been used regularly in prior seasons). There is a $0 cost to participate (except the uniform fee)
Where Summer softball if the highest form of competitive softball MGSA offers, a commitment of participation for players 10U and above is expected
Where it is summer time, it is expected that players may miss some games for planned family vacations, etc.
The expectation is that if your player has earned permanent status, they will be available for at least 8 of 10 regular season games and the playoffs
If you know your player is going to be available for less than 8 of the games (based on the season schedule above), we ask that you let the league know. Your player will be encouraged to participate, but will be designated as "alternate" status for their team.
